Next is Jack Conway’s campaign website. He is currently an Attorney General and will be running for the US Senate for Kentucky in 2010.
Content: 6/10
There is some information about the candidate. However, there is only a video under the issues page. This may have been done in attempt to create a more personalized message for visitors. However, anyone quickly looking for his opinion on a certain issue would have a very difficult time finding it.
Functionality: 7/10
All of the main ways for people to get involved are listed under “Community” in the top navigation bar. This could have been labeled more clearly for people to find faster. Unlike many other campaign sites, there is no form on the homepage for people to sign up to be on an e-mail list.
Ease of Use: 6/10
There are drop-down menus that make it simple for visitors to find information. However, some drop-down menu options are hidden underneath various videos, which make it impossible for anyone to navigate to some of those pages. One video is under the issues link. Additionally, under biography, if you scroll to the very bottom and continue it click on the “< prev” link, it goes through a series of videos, which seemed very random for someone who stumbled upon them. After some investigation, it appears that these links came from the same drop-down menu. However, the navigation for this isn’t very intuitive. Furthermore, it is not made clear that the text on the main navigation bar is a link in itself, along with the drop-down menu options. For example, under “Contact Jack!” there are options to find him on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. And if you click directly on “Contact Jack!” it will take you to a page that includes a phone number and mailing addresses.
Aesthetics: 6/10
Looking at the homepage, the image quality is not as good compared to other sites, and the fonts along the right side of the page appear to be outdated. Some colors chosen look out of place and do not complement each other well. For instance, the light green contribute button on the form comes out of nowhere.
Check back tomorrow for another Democratic candidate’s website review.
